Research Phase

Proto-Persona

Our team created a proto-persona to gain a deeper understanding of Prep 2 Satisfy’s potential users. This reference point guided our decision-making throughout the design thinking process, ensuring our app aligned with the needs and preferences of its audience.

Research & Interview Plan

Interview questions were designed to target user pain points regarding meal prep, grocery shopping, and recipe decision making.

User Interviews

We interviewed six potential users of the app, and all of them expressed a desire for a greater variety of meals each week. They enjoy searching for recipes on social media but struggle to agree on what to eat and face challenges in planning diverse meal plans.

Survey

To gain deeper insights into user preferences, our team conducted a survey. We collected quantitative data from social media responses to identify common preferences and challenges in meal planning and cooking. This information helped us understand what users value most and what obstacles they face when preparing meals.

Definition Phase

Key User Insights

The key user insights highlight a demand for user-friendly cooking solutions to streamline meal planning and provide more meal options.

Affinity Diagram

Upon crafting an affinity diagram, we concluded that many cook at home for the majority of the week and have difficulty deciding on what to make. The common source of new recipes and cooking assistance comes from social medias.

Empathy Map

Then, we created an empathy map to help guide our process and tailor our cooking app ideas to better fit our target audience. This tool helped us understand users’ needs, preferences, and challenges, ensuring our solutions were aligned with their expectations.

User Persona

After making the empathy map, we developed a user persona that embodies the ideal user of Prep 2 Satisfy. This persona captures the needs, preferences, and challenges of our target audience, which guided us in designing a user-centric app.

Problem Statement

Users are currently facing a multifaceted challenge, as they grapple with inefficiencies and limited variety in the meal planning process. The existing platform fails to adequately address the concerns of avoiding food waste, seamlessly combining recipes, managing costs effectively, and maintaining simplicity within time constraints. This results in a user frustration with the lack of a viable solution that optimizes the meal prepping experience, hindering users from achieving their desired balance of efficiency, variety, cost-effectiveness, and simplicity while adhering to their time constraints. How might we simplify the meal preparation process to ensure users have a cost-effective and versatile source, promoting convenience and creativity in their culinary experiences?

Value Proposition Statement

Prep 2 Satisfy offers perfectly balanced meals tailored to our users’ diets, accommodates restrictions, and inspires culinary creativity.

Value Proposition Canvas

We constructed a value proposition canvas to visualize the benefits of the Prep 2 Satisfy app. Prep 2 Satisfy provides tailored meal planning and valuable recipes, empowering users to create delicious and diverse meals with ease.

Competitor Analysis

Ideation Phase

Brainstorming

We began this next phase by brainstorming “I Like,” “I Wish,” “What If,” to prioritize potential features for the Prep 2 Satisfy app. This approach helped us identify and focus on the most valuable and innovative features for our users.

Feature Prioritization

Our team developed a feature prioritization matrix to identify and rank the app’s most important elements, such as recipe suggestions, personalized recommendations, and weekly/monthly cooking challenges.

User Journey Map

We then created a user journey map to outline the user’s interactions and emotions throughout their experience. This map helped us pinpoint areas for enhancement and opportunities to improve the overall user journey with Prep 2 Satisfy.

Storyboard

We also developed a storyboard to visualize our persona’s journey: his struggle to maintain a well-balanced diet for his kids, his search for an app to assist him, the excitement of discovering Prep 2 Satisfy, exploring its diverse recipe options, his satisfaction with the app, and ultimately his recommending it to others.

User Flow Diagram

We created a user flow diagram to outline the key interactions and decision-making points for our users. This diagram highlights the specific steps and choices users encounter which helped us design a more intuitive and efficient experience.

Wireframe Sketches

Our team then drew paper wireframes of the Prep 2 Satisfy app to visually represent its key features and layout. These sketches provided a tangible overview of the app’s structure and functionality.

Prototype & Testing Phase

Low-Fi Digital Wireframes

After sketching the paper wireframes, we developed low-fidelity digital versions and created interactive prototypes.

Low-Fi Usability Testing

We then conducted several usability tests, gathering valuable insights on user interactions and pain points. These findings provided critical feedback allowing us to make the necessary improvements and refine the app’s design.

Mood Board

We created a mood board to ensure the Prep 2 Satisfy app features a cohesive and visually appealing design. It includes a preliminary color palette and a collection of inspirational images that capture the essence of cooking and meal preparation, guiding the app’s overall aesthetic and mood.

Style Guide

Following the creation of the mood board, we developed a comprehensive style guide. This style guide features a refined color palette, visual inspiration, typography, button states, culinary iconography, graphics, and a custom logo. It provides a unified framework for the design of the Prep 2 Satisfy app.

High-Fi Digital Prototype

We then integrated our style guide into the wireframes, resulting in a high-fidelity prototype. This enhanced prototype incorporated the finalized color palette, typography, and design elements, offering a more polished and realistic representation of the app.

High-Fi Usability Testing

Feedback on the app indicated that the onboarding and profile sections were intuitive. However, users found the recipe finder icon too small. In addition to that, the phrasing was not intuitive. Likewise, the distinction between “My Recipes” and “Favorites” was unclear. To address these issues, we renamed the recipe finder to the ‘Culinary Hits’ page and changed “Favorites” to “My Favorites” improving clarity and usability.

Challenges & Resolutions

During the development of Prep 2 Satisfy, we encountered several challenges. One of the key hurdles was balancing dietary preferences with dietary restrictions. Another challenge involved integrating grocery delivery options within the app, making sure the user experience was efficient. In addition, organizing recipes in a way that catered to both experienced cooks and beginners required careful planning. Through thorough testing, user feedback, and iterations, we were able to address these challenges.

Next Steps

For the Future...

We are excited about future opportunities for the Prep 2 Satisfy app, including the addition of interactive cooking classes that allow users to engage in real-time, hands-on culinary experiences. We also plan to integrate with fitness apps, providing a connection between meal planning and fitness goals.
